A few days ago, we were fortunate enough to observe a group of sperm whales passing through the southwest coast of Tenerife. These ocean giants make deep dives in search of squid and octopus, the very same prey that our resident tropical pilot whales feed on.

The pilot whales did not seem to appreciate these intruders entering their territory, and a confrontation was about to begin. More than 100 pilot whales appeared, biting, ramming, and even leaping onto the sperm whales. The sperm whales defended themselves with powerful tail strikes while trying to stay together.

Several bottlenose dolphins also joined the encounter, although it was impossible to determine which side they were supporting.

Sperm whales visit the waters around the Canary Islands more often than many people realize, even though sightings are relatively uncommon. The abundance of giant cephalopods found within the Teno–Rasca marine strip makes this area an important feeding ground for these extraordinary animals.

Nature reminds us once again that the ocean is a stage for some of the most complex and spectacular behaviours in the animal kingdom.
